New research has found that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms such as jumpiness, irritability, sleep problems, and concentration issues are contributing to anger and hostility in U.S. soldiers returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among the study’s other findings were that veterans who had these hyperarousal symptoms of PTSD were more likely to have witnessed family violence before the military, to have fired a weapon during deployment, or to have been deployed for more than one year. The investigators say feelings of hostility make it difficult for veterans to readjust to civilian life.
